For more than 200 years, Fonseca\u2019s port wines have been among the most sought-after. In 1815, Jo\u00e3o dos Santos Fonseca sold his first port wine in Oporto. Just a few years later, he entered into a partnership with Fransisco Jos\u00e9 Gomes Monteiro, and to gain a foothold in the London market they sent Manoel Pedro Guimaraens there in 1920, where he, among other things, sold the port wines from Fonseca & Monteiro. In 1958, the partnership “Fonseca, Monteiro, Guimaraens & Co” broke up, and in 1863 Manoel\u2019s sons bought the trademark \u201cFonseca & Co.\u201d from Monteiro\u2019s heir in Oporto. In 1948, after two world wars, the economy had crumbled despite the success of the vintage ports, and “Guimaraens & Son” was acquired by Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman. The two companies are run separately, and in the 1970s Guimaraens first acquired Quinta do Cruzeiro and later Quinta do Panascal and Quinta de Santo to ensure the quality of the grapes for the famous ports. Since 1994, Adrian and Natascha Bridge, daughter of the former director of Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, have run Guimaraens, which in 2001 changed its name to the “Taylor Fonseca Group” in collaboration with David Guimaraens.<\/p>\n
Each spring, Fonseca\u2019s team selects the wines that will be aged as Old Tawny Ports.
